Using plate amp speaker level inputs?

I've got a pair of Dayton SA70s. I'm thinking of using them either for supplementary bass bins or in a built in passive/powered hybrid type build. Using the speaker level inputs would maintain standard stereo speaker cable only connections. Has there been much experience with this messing with the SQ? I imagine the input impedance is generally pretty high, but I wasn't sure if this was something that many folks would be able to detect in a highly resolving setup.

Searching around online you get an entire spectrum of answers. Was hoping you guys might have some first hand experience.

  • For what it’s worth, I’ve used several Dayton plate amps connected using the high level inputs and never noticed any SQ issue. If I have an RCA sub out I’ll use it, but if not high level seems fine to me. YMMV.

  • I have used the Dayton SA70 and I used the speaker level inputs. No SQ issues with it for me.

  • Worked just fine for me as well.

  • I've built three subwoofers using the SA70. I used the speaker level inputs for all of them and had no problems. Crossover was approx 100Hz low pass on the woofer (TB 8er). Used a 1" tweeter / 4" mid/woofer passive combo in another small cab. No high pass filter on the T/M cabs, however. I just let the mids run free on the bottom, and they rolled off naturally at about 100Hz.

Will you be using a passive high pass on your mid/tweeter cabs? If so, this is where you might run into some impedance peaking issues to deal with.

I ran speaker line level inputs into a small sub with a SA70. (Voxel?)
Noticed that you needed both L and R inputs to get a decent volume.
    No SQ issues.

But Chahly - Stahkist don't want speakers that look good, Stahkist wants speakers that sound good!

The speaker level inputs are just a voltage divider, which is composed of resistors, so unless you believe that a resistor is going to degrade the sound of your sub, it will be just fine. Just think about how many resistors are in the amplifier itself, not to mention capacitors and semiconductors. As you mentioned, the impedance will be high so your stereo amp won't have any load on it.

  • You guys are the best. Thanks for the input!

Sounds like if it does somehow mess with an amp/crossover negatively it would either be a fluke, or something else is wrong.

@4thtry Yeah thinking of using PM180 sealed in 5liters. F6 estimated ~109hz. I need to remeasure them, but factory Qts is low. When I model them at 102db (1m) excursion stays under half the rated xmax until ~19hz. So I figured it would be fine to act like a sealed bookshelf sans highpass.

@rjj45 Good point on using both inputs, similar gain situation as the lower level inputs.

  • While doubt encounter, only thing is to consider is if use a BTL (bridged) amp where both terminals of amp hot - but most would know if using an amp like that, just for those experimental chinazon class D amps that not sure of. Few other situations with some passdiy amps where polarity reversed at output where red post is ground and black hot where intention there to reverse polarity for a single stage amp and to put the 2nd order harmonic character into negative phase - again unlikely or would be aware.
